SysMaster’s New Backbone-SysMaster’s New Backbone-Sparing muSwitch Turns Redundant IPTV Transmissions Into Multiple Profit Streams

Multicast-to-Unicast converter lightens network load by capturing, converting and routing multiple channels to end-user devices over the last mile to cut costs, optimize network usage and value

WALNUT CREEK, CA, April 25, 2007 – SysMaster Corporation, a leading provider of VoIP, IPTV and Wireless solutions for telecoms and service providers, announces the release of its muSwitch product—an advanced Multicast-to-Unicast converter that is specifically designed to operate in IPTV environment.

Intended to make services delivery more cost-efficient and profitable, the muSwitch can capture a particular Multicast IPTV channel, convert it to Unicast format and route it to many end-users. Previously, a provider supporting many IPTV users was forced to stream multiple IPTV channels simultaneously across the network backbone—even if all users were watching the same channel.

The consequence of this approach was major congestion, as redundant data transmissions flooded the network. Such congestion reduces efficiency, degrades transmission quality, and requires capital investment to raise capacity. For services providers, the ability of muSwitch to relieve traffic on the network can be a key factor in delivering a consistent high-quality offering that satisfies customers, as well as in controlling costs of operation.

“At SysMaster, we’re continually developing resources to make delivery of quality IP services simpler, more efficient and more practical for providers,” said Martin Yosifov, SysMaster Director of Marketing. “By minimizing congestion on the backbone, the muSwitch product helps providers gain the best value from their network investment.”

The benefits of muSwitch derive from its ability to convert Multicast to Unicast streams. Sitting between a service provider’s network backbone and the last mile infrastructure, muSwitch prevents multicast streams from entering and cluttering the last mile. Instead, muSwitch converts and routes these streams to multiple users just before they enter the last mile infrastructure. In addition to its converter capabilities, the muSwitch appliance supports several alternative methods for subscribing end-user devices, such as set-top-boxes, to Multicast streams. These methods include IGMP snooping, IGMP subscription and remote TCP subscription.
